LA Happenings (It’s All Happening…)

So it’s my second full time weekend back in my old home city of La La (no more LA-San Diego commutes for this one, ya heard), and aside from a nice little trip to Home Depot to pick out some wallpaper and maybe hitting Bed Bath and Beyond (I don’t know – I don’t know if we’ll have enough time), I’m hoping to check out a few fun happenings around town. Por ejemplo:

1. “Heathers” at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery – Ehmehgah, probably up there with Donnie Darko and Labrynth as one of THE most friggin’ fantastic cult 80s movies in existence. “Heathers” is the glorious film containing such quotes as, “Grow up Heather, bulimia’s so ’87”, “She’s my best friend. God, I hate her” and “Well, fuck me gently with a chainsaw”. Playing at this cemetery-turned-movie theater (I know, I know) at 9 PM – gates open at 7:30. Bring a blankie!

2. Kishani Perera’s brand spankin’ new boutique, RummageMy fashion designer girlcrush Kishani Perera has just opened… deep breath… her own… store here, and design bloggettes the world over are wooshin’ in their pants.

It’s not every day a down-to-earth, brilliantly rad design darling opens up a store to sell her favorite goods from all of her travels.

3. Young Beautiful In A Hurry’s record release debutante ball.

Just a few years back, I remember when the band Maroon 5 was just a group of capricious LA boys trying to hack it in this fine city, playing at bars and parties, hoping to spread the word. Fast forward to 2011 and there’s a new class of musicians trying to do just that. Enter the band Young Beautiful In a Hurry. The music is described as “rock/pop! Sprinkle a little soul and a pinch of early 70s glam on top.” And if promises of their knock-out live performance abilities (I swear!) won’t be able to win your presence, did you know that when lead singer Brendan McCreary had worked as a music teacher teaching little kids, a student inspired him and he wrote a song to encourage her, called Olivia? Let’s get a collective awww now.

Here’s a sneak peak at Young Beautiful In A Hurry’s new songs Light Years and I Got Love.

Record Release Party & Debutante Ball at Molly Malone’s, 575 South Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90036 on Saturday, June 18th.

4. Yarn Bombing! Say whattttt?

Call it the softer side of street art. Or, as a recent New York Times article called it, “grandma graffiti”. The craze is said to have started in Texas, when a group of knitters had leftover material and decided to decorate the urban landscape. It took off in Australia and then spread to New York, where the artists made it larger than life by covering the Wall Street bull and even a whole apartment (with text messages from former lovers in bottom pic). And now LA is hosting its very own event. Watch it unfold.

18th Street Art Center, 1653 18th St, Santa Monica, CA, 90404 on Saturday, June 18th.

5. Tim Burton exhibit at LACMA

Who didn’t grow up lovin’ the odd, dark movies of Tim Burton? Edward Scissorhands? Beetlejuice? Well now until October 31st, 700 (!) pieces of Burton’s art work is at the LACMA, and I’m super curious to check them out. The major retrospective exhibition will feature artwork tied to Burton’s movies, original drawings, sculptures, and more.

LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036. Tickets are 18 smacks for adults.

That’s it for now. I hope you all have a fanTAStic weekend, in LA, Chicago, or wherever you are!

xoxo,

Yo DJ Turn It Up!

So I’m a few days in from my trip last weekend to good ol’ Chi-town (WHAT UP SHTOOPH?!)

And gurrrrrrrl, did I get a taste of the hot, sticky Midwestern summers of yore. Back sweat and BBQs were on the menu for me all weekend… which was a fantastic combo, btw.  And one thing was fer sure – the good people back in the Midwest are READY, after a looooong, brutal winter, for the start of summer.  Amen.

With that in mind, I’ve created a fun new playlist o’ ditties for a good beginning-of-summer jam session.  Steph, enjoy this for your runs by the lake, and I’ll enjoy this while running by the beach and sweating out the 6 lbs of pulled pork I ingested last weekend.  Enjoy!:

Ellie Goulding – “Lights”:   By now you might’ve heard this Londoner actually performed at William and Kate’s reception. But now this UK sensation has surfaced in the US and her electro-folk-pop sounds on this song are part Bjork, part Robyn.

Beastie Boys – “Make Some Noise”:  My fave hip hop trio is BACK and I’m oh so excited, cause their first single from their latest album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 2, is RAD.

Beyonce – “Run The World (Girls)”: Have you guys SEEN this video?!  I can’t take it. Could Sasha Fierce get anymore, well, FIERCE?!  And PS, do me a favor and check out her Billboard Awards performance immediately right here.

Mann – “Buzzin”: Any song that samples one of my and Steph’s favorite classics, Nu Shooz’s “I Can’t Wait”, well… I’m a big fan.  By the way, for any Muncie folks reading this, Nu Shooz’s “I Can’t Wait” = soundtrack to a Gibson’s roller skating party.  “I I I can’t wait!”

Cascada – “Evacuate The Dance Floor”: I’ve been loving this song for a hot minute now.  Cascada’s kinda like the Queen of club tunes in the UK and whenever I’m there for work, inevitably I’ll flip on the telly at 2 AM suffering from jetlag and come across a video of Cascada jumping up and down and singing her little club hits.

Lupe Fiasco ft Trey Songz – “Out Of My Head” – Also been liking this for a bit. My fave skater-turned-rapper Lupe is en fuego right now!

Dr. Dre ft Snoop and Akon – “Kush” – Rollll up wait a minute let me push kush up on it.  What does that even mean?  I don’t know and I don’t care.  The Dr. is back and this song is hot!

Kaskade & Deadmau5 – “Move For Me” – Thank you, Genius Bar, for the recommendation.

LMFAO – “Party Rock Anthem” – Never before Coachella would I have EVER enjoyed a song like this.  I would’ve changed the station so fast.  Three words.  Coachella.Pool.Party.

Britney Spears – “Hold It Against Me” – I don’t give a hoot n’ hollar if her voice is auto tuned to heck.  This song is, again, a byproduct of 8 straight hours of techno/electro in a pool in – you guessed it – Palm Springs.

Foster the People – “Pumped Up Kicks” – Yup, it’s in HEAVY rotation and the fun’s almost over.  But not quite.  Forget that it’s about someone going apesh*t on a bunch of people and mowing them down.  Woopsie.

Duck Sauce – “Barbra Streisand” – Love the video, love the beat, love it, love it, love it.

Erasure – A Little Respect – This throwback’s for my gurl Stephie poo.

I’m off to Florida now for my teensy lil’ brother’s high school graduation (!).  How did this happen?  Love ta love y’alls and have a wonderful weekend!

xoxo,
