(Miracle) Product of the Week: Kérastase Oléo Relax

This one’s for all the frizzy ladies.

I was born with masses upon masses of curly hair.  When I was a peanut, they were soft & shiny (as seen in the picture below…  ps: check out all those jacked up baby teeth.  I wonder if Jayne let me chew on rocks that day).

But when I got a little older, my silky cherub locks morphed into frizzy, unruly pipe cleaners.  I can remember being at the pool in the summertime, and enviously watching my friends’ hair dry gracefully into shiny Pantene waves…  while mine dried leaving me looking like a member of Whitesnake.  And you better not even GET a brush anywhere near my head, because if you do, THIS is what happens:

YIKES.  These days, there’s no telling what’s frolicking around in my hair…  errant bobby pins.  Cookie dough.  Maybe a spare tire.  I’m often told, “duuuude, you could make sweet dreads!”  Mmmmgreat – just what I always wanted.  Added bonus: when it’s humid outside, I look like I licked my finger and stuck it in a light socket.  Kinda like this:

The rugged wilderness north of my shoulders is, however, nothing a nickel-sized dollop of my favorite miracle product can’t fix.  Kérastase’s Oléo Relax Serum ($35) is like the antidote to my afropuffs.

LLLLLLLListen, I’ve tried a LOT of anti-frizz products in my 29 years, and this one blows everything else outta the water.  TIMES 10.  I’m all about less-is-more these days, and not spending on frivilous things, but for those of you who have dry, unruly hair, THIS is something worth investing a bit in.  Think about what you spend $35 on in one week…  Morning lattes.  Eating out for lunch.  Brown bag it – or your brew your latte at home for one week, and you’re there.  It’s all about the trade off.  And no.  I’m not getting paid to plug Kérastase.  Just trying to spread the good word to all my fellow wavy-headed folk suffering from parched locks.  This stuff is super light, and never makes my hair feel weighted-down, greasy or gummy if I use one-squirt-too-many…  instead, it makes my hair look smooth and shiny, and smell glorious.  Like this:

Style it however you want – flat iron it, diffuse it; whatever.  The serum works just as well if I work it through my hair when it’s wet, then let it dry naturally curly.  It comes out all kindsa light & fluffy, soft & shiny.  No more giant brillo pad on my head.  Amen.

A few other things that can’t hurt:  1.  Only shampooing twice a week.  This doesn’t mean skipping showers – you can still jump in there and scrub-a-dub-dub, but just rinse and condition.  2.  A hair mask.  You can whip one up at home:  Mix 1 mashed banana, 1 full egg, 3 tablespoons of honey, 3 tablespoons of milk and 5 tablespoons of olive oil. Make sure it’s well combined and then apply to hair. Leave for 15 – 30 minutes and wash out with a gentle shampoo.
